ABOUT OUR TURFS

Are your grass turfs real grass?
Very real. Our turfs are living, rooted grass grown fresh rather than a piece of synthetic turf.

What is it grown in?
Our grass is grown in a light layer of coco coir — a neutral, chemically inert and pet-safe growing medium made from finely ground coconut husk fibers. No traditional soil required.

What can my pet use it for?
Our entire turf collection was designed for both pet relief and enrichment. Dogs can use it as a convenient potty spot, while dogs, cats and other grass-loving pets can enjoy it for sniffing, exploring, lounging and interacting with a natural surface.

What’s the difference between The Urban Turf, The Purrfect Turf and The Grazer Turf?

Each collection is made with real, locally grown grass, but the blend and intended use are tailored to different pets.

The Urban Turf™ is our most versatile option, made for dogs, cats and other pets. It’s ideal for potty breaks, outdoor-style enrichment and everyday use, especially when getting outside isn’t always convenient.

The Purrfect Turf™ is made specifically for cats, featuring a signature blend of rye, wheat and oat grasses selected for grazing, play and enrichment.

The Grazer’s Turf™ is designed for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals, with a living blend of foraging grasses that gives them a fresh, natural space to graze, explore and enrich their environment.

Not sure which to choose? Urban Turf = versatile everyday use. Purrfect Turf = cats. Grazer’s Turf = small animals.

Is this only for apartment or city dogs?
Not at all. Urban living inspired the idea, but convenience isn't exclusive to the city. The Urban Turf can be useful for apartment dwellers, suburban homes, balconies, patios, puppies, senior pets, inclement weather, travel and plenty of other situations.

Can cats use The Urban Turf?
Yes. While dogs are our primary relief users, cats may enjoy living grass for sensory enrichment, lounging and grazing. Because cats have a natural affinity for specific types of grasses, we created The Purrfect Turf - a mat we designed especially for cats using our signature blend of Rye, Wheat and Oat grasses.

Always supervise pets if they have a tendency to consume large amounts of grass or growing material.

USING YOUR TURF

Can I use it indoors?
Yes. The reusable tray helps contain the mat and protect the surface underneath it. We recommend choosing an area with decent airflow and access to natural light whenever possible.

Can I put it outside?
Absolutely. Balconies and patios are great homes for The Urban Turf. Just remember that extreme heat, cold, heavy rain and intense sun can affect living grass.

Will my dog automatically know what to do with it?
Some dogs take to real grass immediately. Others may need an introduction, particularly if they're accustomed to going exclusively outdoors in a specific setting.

Give them time to sniff and investigate it, and use the same cues and positive reinforcement you normally use for potty breaks.

CARE & REPLACEMENT

How long does a turf last?
On average, your turf can last 2–4 weeks. However, there's no single lifespan because every household is different.

Frequency of use, number and size of pets, whether it's being used primarily for relief or enrichment, watering, light and environmental conditions will all affect longevity.

We'd rather tell you to replace it when it needs replacing than promise an arbitrary number of days.

Does it need to be watered?
Yes — but lightly. It's living grass, so it needs moisture to stay healthy. Keep the growing medium hydrated without allowing it to remain waterlogged.

How do I know when it's time for a refill?
When the turf becomes heavily worn, develops a persistent odor, or has simply reached the end of its useful life, it's time to swap it out.

How do I dispose of the old grass?
The grass and coco coir are plant-based materials, making your used turf compost- and landfill-friendly. Dispose of it in whichever way is most convenient for you.

ORDERING, REFILLS & SUBSCRIPTIONS

How do I get started?
Choose the turf that’s right for your pet, select your preferred mat size, then choose whether you'd like to purchase the grass by itself or bundle with with a perfectly-sized tray for the complete setup. Your fresh, locally grown turf is delivered right to your door and arrives ready to use—simply place it in your tray or preferred setup and let your pet explore. When it’s time for a refresh, just order a replacement grass mat and reuse your tray.

Am I required to purchase a tray, or can I just purchase the grass?
There's absolutely no requirement to purchase the accompanying tray. If you already have an appropriately sized tray or container, you can purchase a grass mat on its own.

Do I need to buy another tray every time?
Nope. That's what the Grass Refill is for. Keep your tray and replace only the living turf.

Do I have to subscribe in order to purchase any of your turf collections?
Not at all. You can purchase The Urban Turf as a one-time order and replenish whenever you need to.

Subscriptions take the hassle out of remembering to order your next refill and include additional savings. Choose from weekly, bi-weekly and monthly rotations.

LOCAL GROWING & DELIVERY

Where is The Urban Turf grown?
Right here in Greater Boston by Rebel Farms. The Urban Turf began as one of our farm's products before growing into a brand of its own.

Where do you deliver?
We deliver to all points within 25 miles of Boston.

Because our turf is delivered by a local courier rather than shipped across the country, we're able to get fresh grass to your door quickly while avoiding costly traditional shipping. Local delivery is $10.

Is The Urban Turf new?
The website is. The turf isn't.

The Urban Turf was born and grown at Rebel Farms before getting its own dedicated home.

Same locally grown grass. Same mission. Just more room to grow.
